Title: Application Engineer (BAS / HVAC)
Location: White Bear Lake, Minnesota (hybrid) (remote on Monday and Friday)
Duration: 6+ month contract
Interview: Phone and Inperson
Leaders at client want us to take a closer look at our potential candidates Building Automation System (BAS) experience. The person that they really want will have started in the IT world and understands IP networks, but has transitioned and now lives and breathes building automaton. The right person will understand what it takes to network connect and control building systems (controls, HVAC, lighting, security, etc.) This person will understand the commercial building construction process and have hands on experience in installing, implementing and troubleshooting IP networks with end devices that control the HVAC equipment. Ideal work experience would include: Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Automated Logic. This person may have been a BAS Technician or an Applications Engineer, who also has IT expertise.
Candidates MUST HAVE practical hands-on Building Automation Systems (BAS) expertise and strong communication skills (answer questions directly – be able to give examples of their work, including: what was the client site that you set up a BAS network on, what type of building (hospital, school, office building), what size, how many controllers, what network configuration, etc. For example: If Trane asks: "Tell me about a building where you have implemented networked solutions," then the candidate should say something like this: "I was the lead on a project in a 50,000 sq. foot office building with 3 floors where we implemented a daisy chain network with x,y,z brand controls." They felt that a few candidates had communication challenges (meaning an inability to directly answer questions, cagey or awkward responses, rehearsed and read responses). That will not work. Candidates MUST have excellent communication skills.
· IT Experience – IP Networks: Strong overall understanding of network topologies and technologies (TCP/IP, BACnet/IP, VLANs, firewalls, and VPNs)
· HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE with Building Automation Systems (BAS) protocols: (BACnet, Modbus, LON) and networking hardware (switches, routers, etc.)
· HVAC expertise (willingness to learn & fill knowledge gaps, based on company guidance)
· Understanding commercial construction & controls contracting process.
· Ability to provide guidance on the design of IP networks within the context of HVAC and building automation.
· Strong problem-solving skills – to address challenges and provide innovative solutions
· Prefer: Experience with ring topology techniques and protocols.
· Prefer: Familiar with IT hardware/software used in IP networks for building automation.
· Prefer: Previous experience in a similar role within the HVAC or building automation industry.
• · Overall, TRANE is interested in hearing any examples of your expertise with BAS projects. For example, please share your response to this: Tell me about a building where you have implemented networked solutions.
