The HVAC Mechanic will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of HVAC equipment at a journeyman level of service including air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, HVAC control systems, and more.
Pay Rate: $37.12 per hour total compensation
This will be a union position.
Shift: Monday-Friday, 10:30am - 7:00pm
Essential Job Functions
• Performs the maintenance, diagnostic testing, overhauling, installation, and effects repairs on a large variety of types of refrigeration, dehumidification, air-conditioning, ventilation and heating systems equipment and controls within critically controlled environmental installations.
• Research specifications as provided by other parties and makes installation corrections required ensuring proper function of equipment as required by tenant agency requirements.
• Performs preventative maintenance functions which include, but are not limited to: changing filters; cleaning cooling towers, cleaning heating and cooling coils, etc.
• Performs a wide variety of building maintenance tasks, which must be performed to proficiency including, but not limited to adjustments and repairs to HVAC and Electrical systems.
• Functions independently and/or in teams. Relied upon to make decisions and sound recommendations concerning HVAC operations and maintenance.
• Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
• Installs evaporator units in chassis or in air-duct system, using hand tools.
• Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment.
• Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant.
• Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit.
• Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source.
• Installs air and water filters in completed installation.
• Injects refrigerant into compressor to test systems and adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
• Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation.
• Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges, electronic leak detector, and electronic micron gauge or soap-and-water solution.
• Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands.
• Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units using electrician's hand tools and test equipment.
• Minor plumbing duties such as repairing and patching pipes; fixing leaks; unclogging sinks, drains, and toilets; and replacing plumbing fixtures.

Required Skills, Experience, And Education
• Minimum of 4 years of experience (within the past 7 years) of progressive, hands-on experience in commercial or industrial settings in a large, complex environment.
• High School diploma or equivalent
• EPA Universal certification or ability to obtain and EPA universal within 3 months of hire
• Ability to read, write, and speak English
• Ability to communicate with a variety of coworkers and government stakeholders
• Knowledge of computers and basic computer applications
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics
• Ability to effectively complete tasks in a team setting or independently
Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and work from heights
Must be able to work on roofs of buildings
Must be physically capable of traveling.
Must have ability to maintain assigned work hours
Must have sufficient endurance to perform tasks over a long period of time
Must have ability to climb ladders of varying heights
Working Environment
The environment will be both inside and outside various facilities
This job may require work on the roof of a building or in the basement and confined spaces
May experience high noise levels in connection with equipment and construction tools
Must be able to perform work while wearing all required PPE.
Must be willing to accept requirements and participate in training for Confined Space to include all aspects of breathing apparatus Fit Testing.
Once certified to do so, must be willing to work in confined spaces
