Position Summary

Under general supervision assembles, installs and repairs according to specifications and

plumbing codes, pipes, fittings and fixtures of; gas, water and room heating, water delivery and

drainage systems.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

This list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures (i.e., water heaters, showers, hot water tanks,

disposal units, ` dishwashers, water softeners and garbage can washers, etc.).

  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending burst pipes and

opening clogged drains.

  • Repairs and/or replaces tubing, gas heating fixtures, furnaces, regulators, controls,

pumps, etc.

  • Studies building plans and drawings to determine materials requirement and

sequence of installations.

  • Inspects structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of

structure resulting from installation of pipe.

  • Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connection passage holes for pipes in

walls and floors.

  • Cuts and threads pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and/or pipe-threading

machine.

  • Solders, brazes and glues pipe, pipe fittings and related materials.
  • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.
  • Tests assembled vessels and piping using specified procedures.
  • Replaces and/or repairs insulating material on piping.
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipefittings, and pipes composed of metals, (i.e., iron,

steel, brass, copper, etc.), and nonmetals (i.e., glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand tools

and power tools).

  • Communicates and assists with other county, city and state agencies regarding

inspection and compliance issues.

  • Responsible for the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Conforms to safety standards as prescribed.
  • Performs other tasks related to the position as assigned.

Involves skilled work in assembling, installing and repairing plumbing systems.

  • Knowledge of plumbing practices and codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and plans.
  • Ability to recognize, understand and interpret all local, state, federal and national codes; such as, IBC, UMC, UPC, NFPA, ASME and ADA.
  • Ability to troubleshoot plumbing systems.
  • Ability to learn and apply operating procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet predetermined deadlines.
  • Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools.
  • Ability to plan and organize work.
  • Ability to perform strenuous, physical work.
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
  • Ability to work flexible hours or shifts.
  • Ability to withstand heights and perform work safely.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students and the public.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.

Position Requirements

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High school graduation or other equivalent (i.e., GED, college, technical, or trade school transcript, foreign equivalency, etc.)
  • Completion of apprenticeship or journeyman certification as a plumber; or a minimum of documented experience.
  • Must be willing to cross train and work in other building trades.
  • Experience working on boilers or willing to be trained.

Licenses and Certificates

  • A valid driver's license that allows the applicant/employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in Nevada. License must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
  • Copy of current driving history issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at time of application or Qualified Selection Pool (Q.S.P) placement and at time of interview prior to final selection.
  • Apprenticeship and/or journeyman certificate/card, if available.
  • State of Nevada Bureau of Safe Drinking Water-Water Distribution/Treatment Operators Certificate or the

ability to obtain such within one year of employment.

  • Nevada State Fire Marshall C of R Types "G", "GU", and Backflow Prevention or the ability to obtain such within six (6) months of employment.
  • Certification as a Certified Back Flow Prevention Assembly Tester accepted by the State of Nevada or the ability to obtain such within six (6) months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.
  • Possess personal characteristics, including but not limited to poise, perspective, integrity, flexibility, and personal appearance necessary for success in the Elko County School District.

EXAMPLES OF ASSIGNED WORK AREAS

Elko County School District facilities - offices, schools (classrooms, restrooms, kitchens, locker rooms, etc.), construction sites, open trenches, chase ways, existing buildings under renovations, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Strength: Heavy - Exert force 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently, or 10-20 lbs. constantly. May involve significant stand/walk/push/pull/carry.

Physical Demands: Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, handling, repetitive fine motor activities and feeling. Occasional talking, hearing, and balancing. Vision: Frequent near and far acuity, depth perception, focal length change and color vision.

Environmental Conditions: Varies from a climate controlled office setting to work outdoors with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud and occasional to frequent time periods.

Hazards: Furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

Examples Of Equipment/Supplies Used To Perform Tasks

Pipes, torches, pipe threading machines, pipe benders, jackhammers, hydraulic and air-powered tools and other tools related to the trade.
